  3. Dear Linguist,

  5. The enclosed files constitute the SIL Encore IPA Fonts. They are
  6. in both TrueType and PostScript Type 1 formats. Please read the
  7. enclosed documentation for more specific information on the
  8. fonts.
  9.  
  10. The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) is an organization of
  11. linguists dedicated to the study and promotion of the thousands
  12. of minority languages around the world. The Printing Arts
  13. Department serves SIL by developing products to assist in the
  14. publication of linguistic texts.
  15.  
  16. We are happy to make these IPA fonts available to the general
  17. linguistic community at no charge. Future releases of SIL fonts,
  18. containing a much richer phonetic character set (750+
  19. characters), will not be free but can be obtained (after 11/92)
  20. at a very reasonable cost by writing to the address below.
  21.  
  22. You may (and are encouraged to) share these fonts with your
  23. friends and co-workers, but with the following restrictions:
  24.  
  25.   * All files must be copied together, including this one.
  26.   * No fee may be charged for the fonts
  27.  
  28. Even though these fonts are "free", SIL retains all copyright and
  29. ownership of the included fonts and reserves the right to
  30. restrict their use and distribution at any time. They may not be
  31. used as a basis for other fonts. They may be placed on bulletin
  32. boards, etc. but cannot be included in (or bundled with) any
  33. commercial product including hard disks or CD-ROMs.

  35. Unfortunately, there is no ideal way to distribute electronically
  36. the Font Keyboard Layout charts and Access Code Tables for the
  37. fonts. You can obtain printed copies of the keyboard charts, as
  38. well as the documentation, by sending $3 ($5 outside the U.S.)
  39. to the address below. I'll try to get them to you quickly.
